Our mini NGO

Posted by Rebecca at 01:49 0 comments
This week in school is our awareness raising week for our topic "Educating Girls".  Each morning in the announcements there will be a fact read out about educating girls. This mornings fact was
"60 million girls are out of education at the moment."
We take for granted that we get education for free and so many girls around the world are illiterate and refused their right to education. To raise awareness we had to create posters to put up around the school to get people thinking.

Our awareness raising action was to hold a screening of girl rising showing one chosen story from the film. We each gave 50 cent to buy popcorn to give to the first years attending the showing we decided to show the story of Amina from Pakistan. Here is the trailer ..

These are the heartfelt stories of girls fighting for their education around the world. If you have the opportunity to watch the movie I would recommend it. Another project we are doing as part of our mini NGO is "Walking to school",  they created a video of the girls walking to school, here's the video.

This inspired us so much we are going to make our own version of walking to school and happy dancing...

Let me know what your thought are from watching the videos or if you have seen the movie comment below :)

Christmas has arrived :D

I just put up my Christmas tree this is so exciting, Christmas is almost here!! We've been singing Christmas Carols in music so it's inspired me to learn Winter Song by Sara Bareilles on the piano, it's difficult but its getting there!

Our school Choir has been practising plenty of Christmas carols as they preformed at the Castletown fair and they will be preforming at our school mass. Walking into school this morning I was shocked, for the first time ever the school had Christmas decorations up, it's so cute. All the trees outside have baubles and tinsel and some notice boards have lights around them. The school is so festive it puts a smile on my face when I walk by!

Friendship Week

Jump On It...

The day had finally arrived, hours of practice had been put in too win the prize, this is what it involve to be the lucky class. Every year our school hosts a fun walk at the end of friend ship week to promote the anti bullying campaign. Within our class we have to create a dance the promotes bullying. There was ups and downs as expected but we pulled through in the end. Each year group is given a colour to dress in and TY's were yellow. This presented a challenge to us as there aren't many yellow characters out there. But we ended up picking Taxi's.

Our dance consisted of my friend Jayne and I dressing up as Carlton and Will from Fresh Prince.

We had to get picked up by a taxi and then we danced to Carltons theme song of "It's not unusual to be loved by anyone" and "Jump On It". It was great fun. We had to preform to our highest standards in front of the four judges and impress them to hopefully be awarded the sacred prize, a box of sweets. After everyone has preformed we embark on a walk of the area. Jayne and I volunteered to help at the crossings. It's always a blast !

When we returned to school after the weekend we sat anxiously in the classrooms awaiting the results of the competition. But unfortunately we did not succeed  :'(. But Congrats to the class that won :).

This was my reaction when we lost

Workshop Numero dos

Massage therapy

This was our second workshop in massage therapy this time it involved head massages and stress release. Jayne and I had to massage each others heads. Jayne wasn't very happy but joined in anyway. We also done a massage train which was interesting...

Positive Parties

This was our second week with Denise also, It was her birthday so we congratulated her. This week the workshop involved laughing. We had to go to each other and pretend to laugh . To be honest i found it a little out of my comfort zone and a bit unnecessary but partook anyway.

BK inniú

This was completely different to any other workshop we've done. They taught us how to walk tall and in high heels. Unfortunately i was unable to partake as i had an injured ankle but enjoyed watching the rest of the class. Secondly we watched a video about the impact of media on our body image. Also we learned how to keep clean nails and how to make home made hand care lotion and body scrub.

The Results

After 3 years of hard work the day had finally come, The Results .  I was so nervous before the big day. We had to get into lines within our classes in alphabetical order and of course i was last. But all in all i was happy with my results :D.

But the most fun was the night out after. There was 16 of us in total going to time in Naas. It was great fun before getting ready and stuff and the disco itself obviously.
